  • I have a very fine example of this classic groupset going spare. Hardly any marks or wear on any of it, even the crankset, and new hoods on the shifters which have been overhauled and re-lubed with Chain-L #5, which is like a heavy gear oil; a far better lube for STIs than the standard grease, which goes gummy and stops the otherwise highly reliable shifters working after a decade.

Group includes levers, calipers, derailers, pedals, crankset (172.5, 53/39), cassette (still good, 12-23), even chain and cable housings if you like. IIRC there's even still some life left in the chain, although it's probably been replaced once or maybe twice.

Looking for 550 quid or thereabouts, but it'll be plus postage from Oz. I'll throw up some detailed pics if there's any interest... Thought I'd offer it to you fine folks before I chuck it up at a higher price on eBay.

  • Here's the crankset for now... The rest of the bits are in about the same condition, but I have to get around to giving them a polish and shooting some more pics

  • Cassette is 12-25 not 12-23, sorry. Chain is 106 links, 0.4% elongated (measured 255mm for ten pairs of links). Original hoods (provided as spares) are in good shape, but a bit sticky. Original housings also included, came off a medium sized bike.

I'll post some daylight pics of all the blemishes, but the faded logo on the drive side crank is about the worst of it.

After examining it all thoroughly, I think there's a chance this is even the original chain... Although perhaps the pedals were used on another bike; they seem to have a bit more wear.

  • before I chuck it up at a higher price on eBay

I'd have a look at sold prices before you do...
550 plus shipping from Oz plus import taxes is quite optimistic.

  • I've had a look at asking prices, bit harder to find sold prices. As far as I can see, given the condition and completeness, AU$1k is about the middle of the value spectrum currently on offer, and actually a pretty good deal if you believe me when I say these shifters won't stop working until the group is worn out...

I'm not accounting for shipping and import taxes, but that's on the buyer, innit? By all means buy locally if there's a better deal near you.

Anyone else care to chime in on whether 550 quid is fair? Open to reasonable offers.

By the way, I saw someone asking north of 650 quid for a NOS 7800 crankset... Now maybe that seems a tad optimistic...

  • As you have asked: Seems like a lot of money to me. Aus is expensive though, I'm often surprised by how much stuff seems to cost there. UK price I recon would be £300 ish maximum. A quick advanced seach showung sold items on UK eBay confirms this. External cable Shimano has to be really wanted by someone for a retro project or they will just buy a later hidden cable group.
    GLWS though

Of course any buyer will be accounting for, which makes 550 very steep. It could be over 700 once shipping and taxes are paid.
As mentioned above, eBay sold prices give a good indication.
It’s not often you see a complete groupset like this tbf and 7800 is by far the nicest groupset released but I’ve never seen a groupset sell for that sort of price.
Fair play if you can find a buyer locally for that price though. glws :)

Oof. I could totally see that being a hard no then
