How do I bathroom / kitchen / extension? etc.

  • Just checked, no stop on the box but the hinge isn’t that loose so doubt it’d get clacked off the wall

  • On noticing some damp next to our 6 month-old under-TV cupboard I’ve drilled some breather holes. No damp on external wall and definite condensation on the wall behind.

Reckon that’ll be enough, or should I be cutting a wider slot with a jigsaw? Any other tips? Will leave the cupboard door off for a few weeks.

  • probably a good idea to get a couple of those dehumidifier crystal tray things in there to draw out any moisture.

  • Seeking recommendations for an internal door. It'll be fitted in a doorway that leads to a part of the house that is cold and breezy and will remain so for at least another year or two. So it needs to look nice but also be somewhat insulated/air-tight. Are there doors specifically for this sort of thing? I don't want it to look like an exterior door and would like some glazing on it too.

  • Cheers, will pick one of those up for future cold snaps.

  • A question that I realise probably has too many variables to get an answer to:

Is £1300 a reasonable price for a fitted cupboard in a bathroom?
It’s tall and narrow (2380 x 205) and in an awkward space between shower and wall, with two doors and a slatted wood finish.
At a guess it’s 2 days to prep/paint and another day to fit, with the materials being pre-cut, so I can see how it got to that amount, materials cost depending. Still about double what I had in my head though…

  • Yes. Fitted cupboards are crazy money.

  • sounds cheap, it’s about £1k per meter for decent custom build in cupboards. once you have 3 days work and vat there isn’t much left for materials/paint. maybe go and see how much sealer/primer/top coat/MDF/planed timber is to buy.

  • I was told roughly £1k per meter width. Your narrow width means it probably won't feel like good value but it probably can't get much lower.

  • tall and narrow (2380 x 205)

    Hang on, 20cm wide?

That is very narrow. Is it worth it? Also why 2 doors?

Do you have the diy skills to stack 3 of these METODs on top of each other?

Some nice hinges and custom doors. Should still be under £500 all in. You could even get a handyman to fit and adjust the doors.

Or have I totally misunderstood the dimensions?

  • Does anyone have any experience using a low-build up underfloor heating system (something like this)?

Our house has a solid concrete slab floor (that has no insulation below it), and I'm a bit confused by some of the different floor build-up options. One option make sense -- insulation panels that the pipes fit in, floor finish over the top... easy. But there is another (apparently better, more premium option) that uses Gypsum boards to hold the pipes and gain thermal mass. There doesn't seem to be any layer of insulation, so what I don't understand is what prevents those gypsum boards transmitting all the heat into the uninsulated floor slab?

  • Yes. I have ufh installed on top of concrete sub floor throughout the ground floor of my house

Plan and supply of system was from nu-heat who I would highly recommend.

They will do a calc to see which option is best for you including flooring options

  • Got this one and it turned and next day and looks like it will work . Bargainers Josh need to hope it does not fall off wall now https://www.argos.co.uk/product/9180725

  • Horizontal split on the doors, not vertical.

I have considered hacking something off the shelf but 205 is max width at the top - at the bottom it’s more like 180 (Victorian walls).

I’ve attached a dodgy photo to illustrate the awkwardness of trying to manoeuvre anything pre-built into it, although you can’t quite see the plaster skim lip that’s built up!

Also, it would be £500 plus 3 days of my time (spread over about 6 months) 😂

  • It’s been a while since I had to buy anything, which is why I’m unsure. Basically happy with the price if it’s not a pisstake!

  • I want to get a bench built against the wall in the red hatched area to make a bit of the space. Any inspo/reccommendations? I had the idea to get it built from ply with some cushions but unsure whether that would actually be comfy.

  • I always thought they looked like student union/6th form common room cheap seating and that annoying Irish chap on the change your home virtual reality makeover program on the telly tried to put them in every design.
    It’s a no from me.
Somebody will probably have a different opinion.

  • Cheers @goodhead -- I'll see what they say.

  • No worries. As I said they will spend the time to take you through it and my personal experience has been excellent with them. Fitting for me was done through the building contractors / plumbers I used who all said they woold recommend to future clients.

Feel free to pm me if you have specific questions but tbf I think nu-heat will answer. It's rare i can recommend such good customer service.

  • It’s a 100% do it from me. We have similar and it’s great.

Bonus points if you get a built in bench on the outside that aligns with the inside so when you open the windows it’s a seamless transition.

  • Love the former bay window as portal with window seat but there's a timespan of about 17 seconds between it being too fucking cold and flyageddon where you could actually use it as intended.

  • Ha. As someone who is surrounded by water and prob more flying insects than the rest of London combined I’d actually say you get plenty of time while the sun is up… sun down is when things get problematic.

  • What's with all the flies? Do you live in a water treatment center?
