That's why I said Euro 4 petrols. Still compatible with all your favourite zones, without the additional crap.
EGRs (yes petrols have them, but they don't clog up anywhere near as much), DMFs (yes petrol have them too now, but on the older stuff it's less common, glow-plug issues (they seize in because they only get changed when they fail compared to spark plugs which is a service item). Obviously turbo systems which can also be avoided with older petrols. If you aren't doing many miles, simplicity is the cheapest motoring available.

DPF and Adblue system. What else?
Isn't the DPF the main thing, that if you're not getting them up to operating temps they don't work properly.
Tbh this is where I'm really sceptical about diesels. I feel that they've been designed for what is increasingly becoming a niche scenario, of pulling proper motorway miles for a good amount of time.
@amey - I'd echo the points about a diesel not being worth it. But I totally get that for certain cars there aren't really many petrol choices. At least with MPVs they'll be economy focused rather than it's being a frugal diesel vs some thirsty V8.

EGR valve? if you go on any car specific facebook group e.g. Audi B9 TDI its just people talking about removing the DPF, AdBlue and EGR valve, which makes your car stink.
I think with diesel just keeping on top of your servicing, using a fuel additive and/or premium fuel and some regular long trips keeps it going.
The torque on a diesel engine is a lot of fun, interesting that Audi moved to diesel for their S models
I'm no diesel hater, but modern ones with all the emissions stuff really are a pain unless you're doing big miles. So many things to throw big bills at you when they fail.
Euro 4 petrols are so simple in comparison.
