  • From the page you linked:

When fitted to an S type stem the height position is the slightly
above an M type. – Use M type cables.

  • Good stuff, welcome to the club

  • This is wrong.

The bars are designed, by JK to convert S to M. It’s not slightly above, it’s the same height.

Therefore you need M type cables.

Sadly the description has been changed since I wrote it.

H type cables are too long.

  • I’ve got a Brompton saddle and S Type bars in silver gathering dust if anyone has any use for them? Both in excellent condition.

£20 each posted from Edinburgh (or £15 each if you can collect) sound fair?

  • My error, I suspected you had written it, but didn't know it was wrong. @chokalateboywonder as above, but you do need longer cables

  • Tips for a perpetually squeaky Brompton? I feel like I've tried everything except the bottom bracket - ironic that. At first, I thought it was the Brooks saddle but I've been using a Charge Spoon for around a year now. I also thought it could be the suspension block, but I replaced that and made sure the axle had a good dollop of blue Mobil grease. Only happens while pedalling too, hence the BB suspicions. I'm using Shimano T8000 pedals, and seriously doubt its them.

  • What Brompton do you have? Mine sometimes squeaks from the cogs/chain tensioner after lubing the chain. Maybe try spinning the cranks without the chain attached to the chainring and see if it does it then?

  • What’s the benefit of doing the 5 speed mod on the 4speed? Do you gain an extra higher gear or lower gear?

Bike hasn’t left my side since I got it. Really enjoying it.

Highlights from first week of Brompton ownership have been. Rushing to collect records (pictured). Being so drunk I couldn’t fold the thing. It was like playing an accordion. Finally, being told off for not folding in a supermarket. It’s been wild.

  • Probably better to get a bigger chainring that adding a 5th cog.

  • S6L. Defo not them. Chain gets cleaned and relubed, also relubed my chain tensioner about a year ago, and replaced it more recently. Cranks/chainings could be contributing to the problem too though.

  • The shop suggested this too. Would like a bit more top end speed. 50t is what it came with. Does going 52t make much of a difference? Tried looking at a gear calculator but I have no idea.

  • It seems I managed to lose 3 of the 5 chainring bolts on my brompton, before the whole drivetrain came to a grinding halt. Could anyone tell me if there's anything specific about the Brompton chainring bolts before I try and source them from my non-Brompton-dealer lbs?

  • I have some spare - yes I too have lost some over the years, and on other 1x bikes that use the same bolt type/size too. Maybe not enough torque? My SRAM chainring bolts normally have thread-locker on them, so I'm going to try that next.

  • Thanks but I'm regrettably not London/UK based any more...

  • The 4 speed Bromptons already come with an 11t high gear, which is the smallest the hub will take, so a basic 5 speed mod can only either make the lowest gear lower or maybe reduce the gaps.

If you want higher gears you need a bigger chainring.

  • Morning all. I shattered the plastic handlebar catch this morning in the -2 C weather when refolding the bike. Does anyone know somewhere near Stratford that carries it? Currently the nearest I can find is Condor or Balfe’s, and I can’t make the diversion easily. Thanks!

  • Hub Velo at the top of Lower Clapton Road.

    Edit: Morning!

  • quick question, the (top tube?) hinge is MAD squeaky. Should I just smash in normal purple grease or is there a suggested substance for hinges

  • I'd prefer to treat the symptom rather than resolve the cause if possible

  • I was thinking of converting my 2 speed to 3 speed using the external derailleur. It’s a 2013 model with the older “rabbit ear” shifter.

Am I correct I’m correct in thinking that I just need:

    Friction thumb shifter (Sunrace M96)
3 cogs (repurposed from a 11 speed Shimano cassette)
    11 speed chain
    Thinner circlip

Anything else I need to be aware of?

  • Just needs a few drops of chain oil if you're feeling completely unfancy.
