Hand wash, as infrequently as you can get away with. I was once told to use shampoo not detergent, which seems to work ok

Shampoo is bad as its meant to make your hair not greasy. Wool wants to keep it's natural grease.
Use wool stuff.

Most wool that you buy these days has virtually no lanolin left in it.
