  • Oh that's interesting. How do you mean? Sorry for my ignorance. Too road race bike like? Reach too long?

  • WTB Nano 700c x 40mm stuck like glue for me on similarly packed dirt over here. Pretty light and quick too (by my standards)

  • +1 for Terra Speeds in the dry.
But of course the real answer is fit the fattest tyre you can and air down…

  • There’s an XL in Swindon;

  • Yes, it has stack and reach numbers similar to an aero bike, I would need a massive
    stack of spacers.

  • Thanks! I think I’m on the edge of L or XL, from memory you are taller than me and ride the XL?

(Also would you have a link to that sale, I can't find it on eBay, potentially because it's pickup only and I'm in Singapore).

  • I’m 6’3 and rode the XL, I’d say they come up a little small. XL’s are pretty rare, that’s a pretty good spec too.
How long are you away for?

  • I moved here permanently mid-2023.

  • It looks to be in good condition - there are a handful of other Slates on eBay which have visibly more wear. Anyone fancy a go at negotiating the price followed by an all expenses paid trip to Swindon?

  • Probably want to budget for a new fork 😬

  • There is this large too,

If you drop me a DM about budget etc possibility I could be a Slate mule

  • Love the colour of the Norwich one. Description seems a bit, erm, light though.

  • Thanks for the tip. I noticed the reach was pretty long. A 58cm Cannondale is 39.9cm (which I used with a 12cm stem), and the Large Rujo is 40cm; XL is 41cm. Maybe the XL with a 11 or 10cm stem would fit me but need to investigate further.

  • Are the stock Planet X ones not very good? I think that one is available with mounting points for panniers too.

  • I guess the long reach might be because they expect you to use a shorter stem for offroad handling. The Canyon Grizl has a 20mm longer reach than my Endurace in the same size with 1mm difference in the stack. But it comes with a 20mm shorter stem so position would be basically the same.

The stack on Planet X bikes always seems super low though - always been way too small for me to buy one.

  • They look pretty tidy, but I don’t like slack head tube angles ;)

  • Those are all frames for short legged riders.

  • This is true, I’ve been described as a 6ft hobbit more than once.

  • It's standover clearance so you don't destroy your genitals when you're off road.

  • Am I mad in wanting to get rid of my stayer OG+ for a Time ADHX45 which a little more racey and would suit road riding when the occasion calls for it better.

Or should I just keep and get a proper road bike, just don’t really have the space for both

  • Not at all. The stayers are really cool but they’re definitely on the more “adventures” side of things. This probably means they don’t feel very fast (I’ve only ridden one for 5 minutes).

All depends what you want really. Something more racey like the time will make a better road bike but it depends if you want to have that feeling while off road.
I have a Argo grav bike and a road bike and I haven’t ridden my road bike properly for months.
I even have two wheel set for my grav bike but honesty barely even change them and just pump the 40s up to 45PSI

  • I have the bike setup with G one 50s and mudguards and can still do local roads during lunch etc in an hour.

But just feel that this leans more towards the trail side of things with how it’s setup but again not sure if I am looking for an excuse to get another bike, not riding the local trails as they would be too clay mud round here and a nightmare in places with sand in others
