Personally, I would do the easy option first and live with it for a bit. Loads of things you think will piss you off in a house are actually fine once you get used to it.
If you like it then you'll save your self a load of money and hassle refitting a whole kitchen and if you don't it's a relatively inexpensive way to find out.

yeah i think i'll start there, we already have an old freestanding fridge freezer in the garage so step one is definitely..
- cutdown worktop on bottom left
- move 40cm cabinet in one to replace the existing 60cm undercounter fridge
- move freestanding fridge into bottom left corner
will work with that.
We've been in the place for ~3 years so we have a fair idea of what we want, but doing it in stages makes sense.
