sure maintenance is a thing in comparison to rim brakes but it comes at a trade off of better braking in all conditions and can use carbon rims

And if you don’t ride carbon wheels, a decent rim brake could be all you need.

Nobody is disputing disc brakes brake better, but I agree they are not a necessity (for everybody). But they probably will benefit the average rider, yes.
