fabric looks like it features a repeating coffee bean pattern
Had not noticed before. It's a "kid proof" Ikea rug.
Well I thought you may have been inviting a countering opinion
I was indeed asking before Christmas, when contemplating buying some cheaper / no brand truing stands on eBay, but no answers or feedback at the time so I fell into the abyssal internet quest of comparing things, watching videos, etc., which conveniently lead me to over-equipping myself (thru a decent eBay second hand deal and a really nice seller actually)
Have you tried changing the ERD in your calculation to see what constitutes a material difference?
Yes I have now, and ordered a Sputnik rim from SJS. Spokes I'd already procured are bang on on the NDS, and only 1mm too long on DS (604mm ERD vs 602mm ERD). Should be fine. The spare rim that turned out to be 32h instead of 36 was the only old bit of the wheel, had it in the garage for years, it's been laced before. Now everything 's new, probably for the best.
You don't mention the hub
It's the controversial Sturmey Archer fixed 3 speed hub, which I've been wanting to try for a while in order to ride fixed again, which I've not been able to do in over 5 years, due to moving house and having to climb crystal palace on my commute!
You are correct, but I like tools, so I treated myself for Christmas.
And yes experience is the most important tool, the one I don't have. I already cocked up some of my prep so couldn't start my wheel on Saturday (was convinced the spare open pro I had was 36h, turns out it's 32h - though I remember checking but eh - so now I need to find an equivalent ERD rim as I've bought spokes :/ )
I had a different stand when building my first and only ever 3 wheels years back, I seem to remember it helped though. My dishing tool is homemade, adjustable so I potentially could do a Brompton wheel, the smallest wheel I have... Hope I get to use that one day...
