Here to say that I'm quite happy with whatever's just happened to this thread. Keep the <10sp shifting, rim braking, 32mm ti(y)re-ing, high bottom bracketing, wronger biking relevant.
Yes, older cross bikes are objectively worse at being an all-rounder than modern "gravel" bikes, but there's a certain something about riding one on single track that doesn't quite come through on more "capable" bikes. Perhaps it's the worry that you could go OTB or pinch-flat at any moment that keeps the excitement up.
