I thought 183 days out of the country in the same tax year would’ve covered the tax avoidance on overseas income?

This is tax at the Saudi end; the deal was tax free if he stayed 24 months or more so he'll have to pay tax there after all.

If you've been working full time in the UK in that tax year then the rules are stricter.
