  • That Vox looks ace!

  • I used Osmo Polyx oil. I don't know if that's the right stuff to use on something that'll be getting more wear than a desk, but it definitely works nicely and looks good on ply.

  • Thanks, that looks perfect. It can be used in floors and furniture, so hard wearing and I can use the same product for the whole board.

  • That's a nice pedal collection. I keep seeing that Broadcast pedal on the SoundGas IG page, love the industrial design of it. It's a pre-amp right?

  • It has two halves. Goes from a nice warm boost, up through distortion, to a transformery fuzz. Gets noisy up towards fuzz stuff but it's a lovely thing.

  • Been meaning to try one of them.

Honestly, i'm so tempted by that Peavey and a potential rehearsal room beater. I love old Peavey stuff and 50w with 2 6L6s and 12" speakers is tempting prospect for a hundred bux. They go for over £300 on Reverb if you can find one in the UK.

  • Thanks. Since I've stopped gigging, I sold a load of pedals I had amassed over the years, and invested in a a few nice ones to cover the sounds I want to get at home. Just a couple more to get.

The Broadcast is a great pedal, both in looks and sound. They have been around a while, but I think a lot of people find they are both distinct and versatile enough for a spot on the board, hence so popular still.

As @Sparky says, the low gain side is a nice boost for the crunch coming from the RD. Flip the switch to the high gain side, and it's a really fun distortion with a gnarly fuzzy characteristic.

Muffroom -> Broadcast -> Revival is ticking all the boxes for me at the moment.

  • Oof, that looks nice.

  • Anyone fancy a 2012 MIM Classic Player Jaguar Special HH with the case candy/bar/gigbag? LFGSS mates rates pickup Croydon, also an ‘84 Tokai Goldstar Sound with some mods/BK pups etc, let me know! 😊

  • Sounds like you got the Broadcast with the high/low switch. I got the one with two footswitches; you can have the pre-amp on all the time, and kick in the extra gain stage for fuzziness. It's like two pedals in one, really.

  • Yep, that’s the one. I can’t really recall the chronology of the pedal, but when I got it I thought the toggle was odd when it could have been a foot switch, so maybe the two button version wasn’t available at the time.

  • How much on the Jag?

  • Starting to clear the rat’s nest inside this radio to turn it into an EL84 powered BF Champ…

    Should be fun!

  • Amazing. Well up for following a thread of you have the time to document it?

  • I might not be consistent enough to keep a thread alive...! I will post some updates as I go though, and if you're interested in the whole journey (from idea to buying the radio, working out its transformers and coming up with a new schematic) I can point you in the direction of this thread on the EL34world tube amp forum

The gutting has gone well, few bits to go but mostly clear, it will all need a little scrub. It's amazing how gunky time is - had you seem my hands you'd have thought I just finished taking apart my bike's drivetrain...!

  • That looks brilliant, makes me wish I knew more about electronics.

I built a fuzz box for my Design & Technology A level (in 1984!!), my mate got the schematic out of an electronics magazine and I acid etched the board for him to populate with the components. Wish I'd been more curious at the time and kept up the interest.

  • Are you an engineer, or just winging it? I bought a tube powered auxillary speaker that was supposed to connect to an old Decca turntable from the 60s to give stereo sound. It has a 1/4 inch jack input and a built-in speaker, so you can plug a guitar in and it sounds pretty great. But I imagine it's quite dangerous, so I took it to an amp tech on Denmark Street before lockdown for a service and re-jig, but he sat on it for like 3 years and returned it with a modern plug on and said "no time, no changes, no charge". I still have it but am a little wary of using it.

  • Absolutely winging it, more or less anyway. I’ve had the itch to build a tube amp for a long time and in the past year I’ve done a lot of reading and trying to understand how things work, at least to a point.

Far from being an expert at this point but have a pretty clear idea of what I can expect and a few pointers about best practice.

This build’s planning was made a little more challenging by the fact I’m reusing the transformers, which work fine but have a couple peculiarities compared to your standard modern center tapped ones, but nothing major ultimately.

The plan was to start with an AC15/Matchless type build from scratch but I then started looking at old radios and fell in the rabbit hole of conversions. The fact it’s a smaller single ended design and it comes with transformers, chassis and cabinet makes it a slightly easier first step, or at least so it feels!

  • Totally understand this. I'm forever scouring eBay for odd stuff that could be converted to a guitar amp. That's how I ended up with this Decca. I've done a bit of electronics but the instantly-kill-you nature of tube circuits has always put me off tinkering; building a kit is one thing, but wandering off-piste is entirely scarier.

  • I've been wanting to start a build or conversion for ages too. Looked at kits last year but the budget didn't stretch to the ones I was jonesing for.

Started listening to this podcast last year which can be great -although it seems to be into diminishing returns now. There's only so many times the same guy can recommend buying a Variac and powering things up slowly...

  • anyone in here had a go at fitting Seymour Duncan Triple Shot pick up rings? I rather fancy switching the PAFs in my LP special to P-Rails with Triple Shots, but schematics make my brain shut down

  • Just started listening to that, coincidentally. The Fretboard Journal's main podcast is worth a listen too.

  • I have no eye deer. Sorry.

  • I had a rush of blood to the head and subscribed to the print mag last year. It's ok.. loads of stuff about gear that's the wrong side of marmite for me. And tbh the writing is annoying as well. A lot of it is from that overly sincere style that veers dangerously close to guitar lore live-laugh-laugh lovery. A lot of hot guff about not much. I'm struggling to articulate it but i know it when i read it. Half the copy reads like a Jack Daniels advert. It's def aimed at conervative nostagic boomer americans.
