  • This is the problem with jags. Cheap to buy when they’re older but costly to fix when they inevitable go wrong.

I love the s type. Just with it had 4wd.

  • Is that @RonAsheton's Subaru in the background?

  • I am going to try and buy something stupid on the 2nd with the same badge and if it all lines up will also put in an appearance.

  • Yes it did. I still get pangs of desire when I see an S124.

  • I am going to try and buy something stupid on the 2nd

Postponed to tomorrow due to weather/work, and sold. Pointless cheap-but-not-shit e86 quest continues.

    (Replied in error, sorry bq)

  • Which engine are you going for? Something with 6 cylinders hope.

  • They only come with the 3.0 n52, so it’ll be that. It’s just a matter of pouncing on the right one before they go. £7.5k should get a well serviced 100k mile one with a few options, but it’ll also get you some proper battered ones. Luck of the draw. This one is the one I missed – a sport mis-registered as an SE and with cruise control and the 10 speaker upgrade present but for some reason not on the options list. Xenons also rare at that price point. I was hoping it would remain overlooked a little longer… Ideally I want silver grey with a light interior but black in black would at least match my 330.

  • Ahhh my bad, E86 is the coupe. Looking forward to the pics

  • Money can't buy you a nice gilet it seems.

  • Power bank jump starters - all much the same?

Aged parents have asked for one - they live on a damp Scottish island so the car doesn't get much use (town is 6 miles away) but at the same time.is quite important when they need it. Small car, Suzuki Swift I think.

I had a quick look on Amazon and they seem to go from £40 to £200+. Want something that will work when needed but don't necessarily want to fork out £200.

  • Got one from Amazon (geeloo?) and has worked the once it was needed. But being cheap Chinese there are mentioned a number that no longer work after being in the boot for ages.

Nobo are supposed to be good, from reading on the internet but they are expensive.

Are Lidl selling one at the moment? As the last one I had from them worked till it was nicked.

  • I have a Topdon JS2000 from ebay and too many cars so it gets some use. No issues so far, it does the job.

  • Can’t go wrong the with 2l / 3l Halfords advanced power bank jumper. It’s always worked a treat for me.

  • thanks all - seems like the £40 one maybe a bit too cheap.

  • OK, doing the numbers on our Uber/Zipcar usage and we're considering getting a cheap car again. This is coupled with the fact that we've had a few problems with Zipcars recently (previous people being late, app not working properly, availability problems).

Needs to last at least a year, ideally it would last a few more than that.
    Must be ULEZ compliant.
Needs to carry 3 people plus bulky luggage so something more than a Fiat 500.

    Other than it's pretty open.

Last one was a 2001 Citroen Saxo 1.1 that wasn't going to pass another MOT due to chassis corrosion, so it really doesn't have to be anything special.

Is the London banger market up in the air because of lots of people needing cheap ULEZ compliant replacements?

Or, anyone got anything suitable under £1k?

  • I'm also in the market: particularly for audi, vw sdi, and toyota 1.9/2.0L diesels from before 2001/2. non-PD engines, looking for ideal balance of not rusted, relatively sophisticated inside and bloody agricultural under the hood. Budget £800

  • Yeah, that kind of thing, although a bit cheaper would be better. We'd be looking at ~£300 insurance, £210 for parking permit so I'd rather keep the total outlay below £1500.

Also MOT due in March is a concern.

In July 2022 when I took my old Saxo for its MOT (at a Citroen dealer) they told me it had passed but wouldn't pass again in Jul 2023. I asked the dealer what to do with it and they advised me to sell it privately with about 3 months left on the MOT, even though they knew categorically that it would never pass another MOT. I could never be that much of a cunt so I scrapped it.

  • I don't know what the market is like, but would assume you could expect to negotiate 10% off if you turn up ready to buy and drive away.

There doesn't seem to be much of a supply of drivable cars with MOT for under £1,000.

  • Are any of the more common l pick up trucks any better at driving on the motor way than other?

  • From my observations they all drive pretty badly.

  • The Mitsubishi l200 is as comfortable as most normal cars (if road tyres are fitted) and also a generally nice place to be. I have had mine from new in 2017 and it hasn't given me a single problem.
