Morning All.
Trying to source a front mech for a pal who's building up an old Peugeot. Has a 6 speed cassette and 52/42 chainrings, clamp on. Pls could anyone suggest some options? I'm a bit lost/don't know what I don't know.
TIA

That'll buff out.
But not before you end up in hospital.

How old? Most of the 70s and up steel ones will take a 28.6mm clamp. 52/42 was the road default for many years, so there are loads of FDs out there which will work with a friction down tube lever, commonly on Peugeots Simplex or Huret, but there are suitable models from Campag, Suntour, Shimano, Gipiemme and Zeus among others. Some modern road FDs won't like a gap of only 10T, so be careful with anything 21st century.

Hopefully an easy question for someone, are Shimano downtube cable stops compatible with a Campagnolo groupset?
-
• #5931
Yep, no reason why not other than matchy-matchy

Thank you!

Shimano Claris band-on double.

nice one, thank you

Even without the crack, I'd say this is definitely toast. Aluminium fatigues given half a chance, and that dent is evidently a big invitation.
And the more highly engineered the item, the more marginal it is... CAAD12 is right up there. I'd swap it for the dodgy carbon frame in a heartbeat

Ally isn't carbon.
The carbon could feasibly be repaired. The ally, even if the damage was at a good place to repair like the end of the tube, would require heat treating after welding, and that ain't happening.

Sometimes you get a hassle with those, where there seems to be a flat shoulder on the shifter boss; it'll probably just be the remains of old shifters jammed on there. Grab and wiggle with vise grips.
Or maybe you have a fat downtube and the radius is nowhere near the same... In the latter case, I've seen them just reefed on so they've bitten into the tube, yuck. File the adapters to suit.

Need a new chain for the Stanton - how many links d'ya think I need to buy for 30x51T? I can't find what I bought in the past and sitting here typing this is easier than going and counting it.
I see 126 and 138 options

If you know the chainstay length, you can calculate it here:
http://www.machinehead-software.co.uk/bike/chain_length/chainlengthcalc.html126 will cover you up to about 500mm chainstay length

435mm for the 19" according to Stanton's website.
That calculator suggests "Recommended length = 56 inches or 56 links" so dunno wtf is going on there.

It's slack language, but 56 inches is 56 link pairs (inner+outer), so 112 pitches.

So, I might be able to get away with a 116? Or does that not factor in jockey wheels etc

The calculation allows for the dérailleur if you used the dérailleur calculation 🙂

You know after all that I don't trust it so I'm going to count the feckin' links...
-
• #5946
Count of 57, so 114, so the 116 link chain should work. Thanks dude. I might trust the calculator from now on :)

This trick I do as I find counting links annoying https://www.sheldonbrown.com/derailer-adjustment.html#chain
On that link is an image that I can't seem to get to inbed here. Explanation in the text as I wished to quote but cannot on a phone.

Oh get the metal bodied ones and not the plastic bodied ones, as have had plastic ones split where the knurled knob screws in.

Hi all, I wonder if anyone can advise whether the wear on this carbon steerer is anything to be concerned about? It seems to be in line with the split crown race in the top of the head tube, it's less than a mm deep but I can catch it with my finger nail.
I've never owned a full carbon fork before so I don't know whether its something to be worried about. It's done about 20,00okm.

Yeah, time for replacement. Hope the eagle means you've received money 😉
