  • I keep taking wrong turns when cycling and trying to follow routes on my Garmin watch. The screen is a bit small for my aging eyes when glancing at it and being on my wrist it is in the wrong place.

I'd like something handlebar mounted. Tempted by a Garmin 1040. Bigger screen is presumably easier to see. Is there anything else I should be considering? Wiggle have it for £397 which feels good.

  • 1030 Plus is my favourite Edge by a long way.

I do want to try a 1040 to see how badly they've fucked up the new UI.

  • Wiggle have it for £397 which feels good.

    Are they still in business?

    oof £580 for the Solar

  • Are they still in business?

Not sure, I'm prepared to risk a credit card purchase and see what happens

    Solar

For me I don't see the point. I don't see multi-day activities without being able to plug in likely. I would probably go with a Solar option for a watch since I wear that all day but a bike computer I can charge after a ride.

  • Then why pay extra for the 1040 at all if the 1030 Plus lasts a day?

For me, the extra battery capacity helps because it means when camping and not in a hotel every night, I have less need to plug into my Anker battery pack, which means less chance of getting caught out in bad weather while recharging it and it saves the battery pack for phones and lights.

  • The 1030 plus seems more than the Wiggle cheap 1040 and newer must be better?

  • Interesting. They must've heard I use one...

  • It's like they're listening...

  • Any recommendations on decent seatpost mounts for varia 515? The included ones are awful. Round post, 27.2 and 31.6.

  • This. Solid. https://www.merlincycles.com/garmin-varia-seat-post-quarter-turn-mount-103545.html

There's also a KOM cycling one with BOA dials but it's an overkill (and 3x the price) for a round seatpost.

  • Thanks for reaching out. At this time, it's not possible to prevent the Route Planner from utilizing ferries in the routing algorithm, but I can certainly see why this would be helpful. I've flagged your ticket for our product development team to consider for future implementation. In the meantime, don't hesitate to reach out with further questions, comments, or feedback.

  • If you are just viewing a route without navigating it, the app will open the map to show the full route without retaining any of your zoom or pan settings. This is by design as the app thinks you want to see the route in full, since you're essentially opening the app again. This is not a setting that can be disabled in the app.

If you want to retain your zoom level and map orientation, you can open a route in the Mobile Route Planner, and then your zoom level/location should be maintained until you exit the Route Planner. If you are actively navigating a route, you will see your current location and it should retain your zoom level, too.

Similarly, when you reload the app, your lists will also refresh to return you to the "top" of your list. Your list sorting and filters should persist when you background the app, though. You can enter a keyword search or apply a filter to your lists if you would like to keep your results narrowed down when you return to your lists (see screenshot: https://s3.amazonaws.com/rwgps/screenshots/09-5151023060109-51-06.png).

I can understand why it's valuable to keep your zoom level persistent when viewing a section of a route map and not navigating or planning it, though. I'm flagging this conversation as feedback for our product development team to take a look at and consider for future implementation.

Additionally, I'm trying to replicate the bug that you reported - where you are unable to directly change map layers from RWGPS Cycle to OSM, but I am unable to reproduce what you're reporting on my Android devices. So that I can look into this more closely would you confirm whether you're seeing this behavior in our mobile app or on our website? Additionally, what are you doing when you are unable to directly switch to the OSM map layer - are you viewing one of your routes, viewing another user's routes, navigating a route, recording a ride, planning a route, or doing something else?

I spoke to our mobile team, and it sounds like they have been working on having a persistent zoom level when viewing your route overview maps. I don't have an exact timeline for this project, but I did want to let you know that this is on our radar.

Additionally, one of my colleagues and I did a bit more digging into what you reported about sometimes not being able to select OSM as a map type in the mobile app. We were eventually able to reproduce this, but only when working with routes that were downloaded as Offline Maps. This does indeed look like a bug, and we appreciate you reporting it to us. I have alerted our developers of this issue, and they are currently reviewing it.

In the meantime, if you do end up having difficulty selecting OSM as a map type when viewing a route that is not downloaded as an Offline Map, please let me know. Thank you, Hip!

  • Is that rwgps? I don't recall that issue, which routing mode?

  • Almost certainly cycling using OSM maps. They've added it to their list of fixes anyway so it should get dealt with at some point. I've also tried to improve the OSM maps for that ferry.

  • That's quite a bug. Ive not encounter it oddly.

  • If there's a way to break stuff, I'll find it.

  • Looks like Strava are killing fatmap as a standalone and integrating it into Strava. Shame.

  • I want to send the lakesman route to my wahoo so I can first ride this at home with the wahoo to control my turbo, and then go to ride it for real.
Which of these file types will include the gradients? Last time I tried this I had the turns and route on a map but no hills

Edit.. solved this myself. Seems like gpx file includes the hills whereas I had fit file before which didn’t

  • Is there something going on with Garmins under-recording climbing?

I did a ride today which was meant to be about 600m and Garmin, and hence Strava, says it was 200m. The trace is much flatter than it should be and it even records some climbs as being descents - eg Cryers hill is like an 80m climb, but it thought it was a descent.

I also spotted a clubmate who I rode with on Sunday had his climbing under-recorded. It was a ride that should have been 900m. My Garmin registered 380 and his was 430. Another guy with a Wahoo got 1100.

I know there is always some variation but not this much. Is my Garmin fucked or is everyone getting this since last week?

  • What's the weather like? Their inbuilt barometric sensor is crap.

  • Cloudy, but not that bad.

It was giving me negative climbing when I was going up the Crong on Sunday. It's not inaccurate, but completely wrong. I would be sure it was my device if my club mate didn't have dodgy data too.

  • My 1030 Plus and the grrl's 1030 are usually within 10m of each other and pretty close to marked elevations. Better than her Wahoo was. I wonder if the sensor in yours is skwiffy? Can you see if the holes are blocked or something?

  • And you've used it in the last week? Mine was fine until Sunday. Did a ride last Friday that was normal.
    Holes seem fine.

I guess I would have heard if everyone's garmin had gone awol

  • Um, yeah. I can have a look at yesterday's ride.

But why do you think time would matter? is it appearing ok on the head unit but not online? It could be an issue with Connect or whatever, if that's the case.
