I like how the risers compensate for Surlys crazy short ht, like they planned it.

Looked perfect in any case.

Did you not have 2x8 set up recently?

Yes. Compulsive tinkerer. We'll see how long this lasts

I'm gonna swap to flat bars for the tourer for 24'. Are Ergons still the go to for comfy grips? Or are there any new companies doing good things?

• #27292
Let down by tires and way too much honey colored stuff in the picture.

Ergon still best imo.

Ergons are so good I will not buy anything else again
-
• #27295
Indeed. Ergon are wonderful, especially the ones with the little nubby bar ends. Others that are worth a try: Oury with bar ends like Cane Creek, or super fat ESI or similar foam grips also with bar ends like Cane Creek.
TLDR: Get grips that are nice to grab, and add good bar ends.

How's the pinion? I'm starting to think it may be more me than xt di2 for lazy low gearing.
-
• #27297
Personally I prefer barends on the inside of the grip - I donโt get along with them on the outside anymore unless the bars are really narrow
-
• #27298
Fair enough. I also like them inboard of the grips. Gives a nice "on the hoods" position. And if in the right spot between the grip and brake lever, you can brake from the bar ends a bit. Also less likely to catch brush and trees off road when they're inboard.
I do still like them out on the ends though. Outside is nice for climbing on trail, or long standing climbs anywhere.

I am running 30/26, which is fairly "though" (for a pinion) I have a walking speed gear (which I have never really used unironically) and a 35kmh+ gear.
You have to get used to the shifting. You can't shift under any load (so the polar opposite of the di2). Though love the how smooth the pedaling feels. I think perfect for a tourer/Trekking Bike. Wouldn't use it in any form of sporty riding

My riding is more dad bike, commute, shopping, occasional weekend away shenanigans.
Sporty is against my knees interest in moving.
