I’d checked in advance and found that our bins were being collected today (our usually day is a Monday). I notified everyone on our street WhatsApp ground, and basked in the resulting adulation - buoyed by the additional waste generated by Christmas.
It happens that today is my birthday - I think the warm, smug feeling I’ve had all day has been the best present I could receive.
