It's a bit of a conundrum, as you want to get them indoctrinated but don't want to risk putting them off football. I've managed to get my 6-yr old to see Prem and local teams this year. He still won't watch a match in the house, but got him excited about recognising and seeing some of the main players and going to a big stadium. He's not usually great on concentration, but got well into it, as long as I was telling him when all his favourites had the ball. Even offered to leave 10 mins from the end and take him to the shop, but he wanted to stay til the end.
Followed that up with a trip a few weeks later to see the local team with about 300 people in the ground. He enjoyed that too, despite our not knowing a single player and it being a pretty dire 0-0.
YMMV, it obviously very much depends on the kid, but I waited until I felt he was ready and made it a big daddy adventure kinda thing. It worked, but equally I wouldn't have been surprised if he'd wanted to go home after 10 mins and never shown an interest in football again.
How do parents who take there kids to watch proper paid for football cope? Took my nephews 7 and 5 to watch our local team yesterday. 7 year old lasted 15 minutes before wanting to go home and get his ipad, 5 year old lasted until he had eaten everything in his lunch box, which to be fair was nearly the whole of 1st half.
