I once fractured my skull when I fell off. Wasn't wearing a helmet. Woke up with a neurosurgeon asking me tricky questions to see if I needed an operation. I suspect a helmet would have prevented the fracture. But the lesson I learned was not to twat around on American bikes, which all have the brake cables connected arse about face. (The back wheel slid and I fell on my temple.)
