Seeing as I've just been reading a fuckton of stuff about this recently: mean maximal power* can be used a sufficiently accurate proxy for critical power or ftp, though accuracy degrades the fewer the maximal efforts undertaken (Spragg & Leo, 2020 & Spragg et all. 2022).
You can model FTP without tests, but if you're not actually putting effort in, then it's going to be rubbish
* the maxima of a series of power duration curves (per cycling activity), where the PDC is a convolution of maximum power over time for that activity.
