    ā€œLā€ brackets mounted inwards, then attach the post. So the bracket touching the brickwork is hidden by the post.

    Iā€™m off up north for Christmas, this afternoon (all being well with trains), and my mum n dad have a list of similar DIY tasks to keep me busy. :D

  • Mission accomplished! I decided against mounting the brackets inward on account of the wall not even being close to square.

  • It looks like you've screwed the latch into end grain there. I would not expect that to be a lasting solution. Were you to turn the wooden block through 90Ā° in the vertical axis, I would expect that to be more robust.
    ETA - you may need to screw two blocks of wood together, in that orientation, in order to clear the white pipe.
