  • Thanks for answering - very kind. Yeah, maybe I'm overthinking the issue. I was thinking I'd screw in countersunk screws to the wood, straight through into the brick. But those would need to be crazy long screws, so I think L brackets are going to work better. Potentially I could hide some of the L bracket under the wood itself ...

  • You could.

    “L” brackets mounted inwards, then attach the post. So the bracket touching the brickwork is hidden by the post.

    I’m off up north for Christmas, this afternoon (all being well with trains), and my mum n dad have a list of similar DIY tasks to keep me busy. :D

  • Haha, you poor thing! Good luck with the trains. It's madness here this morning in Derbyshire - loads of trees down on the roads this morning. I got kiddo to nursery fine, but really struggled coming back. 3 of 4 potential routes back were completely blocked.

  • Mission accomplished! I decided against mounting the brackets inward on account of the wall not even being close to square.
