i've gone for a very short spin now and it may have helped a little but the tyre is still very wonky. the bead seems high in some places and there are gaps to the side of the rim in other places. it definitely wouldn't hold air without a tube as it is.
i probably won't have time to look at it again today so i'll either take it for a slightly longer spin tomorrow or (more likely) take off the extra tape that i probably shouldn't have added.

Have you tried a short ride with it? That usually beds it in, in my experience.
