A controversial lack of orthodoxy from Roses the bakers here. The box claims “the best mince pies” which is a bold claim that I’m afraid the contents do not uphold. So far have sampled the star-topped brandy cream one. Pretty decent tbh despite the heretical approach to lid. Brandy cream not brandy enough, little too sweet overall, but good pastry. Solid 7.5/10.

My efforts this year. Pleased with round one, but the mince needs more orange zest, not quite tangy enough. But the chunky pastry works well. Also a tip I learnt from an old baker girlfriend: Cover everything in gold for an easy wow factor. Works every time.

Cover everything in gold for an easy wow factor
A dusting of icing sugar will obscure many sins

True. But gold makes it look intentional lol

First antipodean effort: Two Chaps Marrickville
Great pastry, crumbly and short. Filling was a bit young, not boozy enough and no tang of citrus peel. Spotted a cherry in there which is a bit off piste.
At $4 a pie it’s only £2 so not bad for an artisan mincer. 6.5/10

Enjoyed the offering from Flour Station, not bad for a southern mincer.

Simultaneous bakery and Tesco deliveries. I now have 34 mince pies in the house. Which when I say it out loud makes me think…shit, that’s not enough mince pies.

Just nabbed a Tesco sixer. £1.10.
Best value ever.

Waitrose standard mincers: overdone it on the sugar and way too much nutmeg. Expected better.

Did the de-lidding manoeuvre on a Sainsburys TTD. Added some rum and nuked it for 15 seconds. Pretty good. Microwaves seem to heat mince pies far better than any other foodstuff. Makes the patty a bit dank but hit the spot after a long ride home in the dark and wet.
Going to try some condor ones next. Apparently they’re good.

These look great. I think irregularity of home made makes for better UX.

Have microwaved a mince pie in the past and melted the skin off the inside of my mouth.... As they say in Hill Street Blues, let's be careful out there

Just polished off a pack of artisan antipodean mincers. They had sour cherries in the mince which is clearly heretical but was really good. However they also decided to put rye flour in the pastry for some bonkers reason and it also wasn't short enough. 6/10.

1st mincey of the season (very late for me, but intend to go extremely hard from here on in).
Local GL5 bakery, Walkers, basically a shortbread biscuit as a lid, not overly sweet, subtle tang. 60p a piece. Felt like I was getting 2 things in 1. So a firm 19/20.

Had to get one of these. Heresy, obviously, but extremely delicious heresy.
