It's Bog Oak which grew in a swamp, died upright and gently subsided into it, where it has been preserved anaerobically ever since. It has been carbon dated as 3000 years old. It pre-dates ancient Greece and Rome and was old before a carpenter was nailed to a cross.
Anyway, it was given to me by a bloke who deals in rare timber, so long as I make him a stick from it. It retails at £1200 for an 8' plank! There should be 2, possibly 3, stick handles in it. The first step is to plank it by hand, there isn't currently a single flat surface. I shall report back at intervals...
