Yes the rhino handle attachment is way better than the Hario
-

Cheers both ; the fact the Aeropress one of theirs can fit inside the Aeropress itself is also a winner

Oh cool, I didn't know they'd done that (though it looks like it came out around 7 years ago)!
I have one of the older Rhinos that's a bit too big for it (the Porlex fits nicely inside but are a fair bit more pricey).

Anyone use Truestart before? My wife bought 3kg of beans on a deal and for the life of me I can’t make it taste anything other than grim

I've not really been tempted by these sorts of boiler-less lever machines, but this one does look pretty damn cool IMO.
I am a bit surprised at how many of these styles of machines there are recently, but no one seems to be going the Europiccola route. Would be nice to see if anyone can make some useful innovations on that style of machine.

Expensive compared to the competition and not really innovative.
Looks nice though. -

Yeah, more and more seem to be popping up. I'd argue that the Flair 58+ ticks all of the boxes for this kind of machine outside of having an ugly power supply. Robot and Flair really do have this product type covered IMO. Robot is so foolproof, the Flair is very capable and uses 58mm accessories... Everything else seems to be kinda novel. E.g. this wild thing: https://espressoforge.com/
Just watched the video... Two preheat flushes, and post shot flush and having to scrub the grouphead with a brush? Na, I'm good.

This popped up on French amazon so I pulled the trigger, haven't used it yet but the rattley lid is already pissing me off. Is that normal or do I have a dud one?

I bought some Third Wave Water to add to distilled water (0 TDS from my Zero water filter) and damn. It really does make a difference. Flavor’s are legitimately waaaaaay more prominent.

Distilled water is a pain in the ass to get though. Where did you get some?

Just use Tesco Ashbeck spring, it’s pretty bang on for TDS/PH and readily available. It’s not ‘spring’ water but tap water that’s gone through industrial scale reverse osmosis at 21p/Ltr

On gas mine doesn't rattle. On induction it only rattles as it boils. I kinda like it as an audio cue in case I get distracted.
-
• #25269
Ah I'm in Ireland so the Tesco brand water is under a different name. Wonder it is the same process though?

It's more just how the lid just sits on top so it moves when you pick the kettle up.

Is the rok espresso really that bad? It’s in my price point otherwise I’d get a robot
-
• #25272
No. It’s not bad. It’s okay. It’ll make decent espresso. But you need a grinder that is espresso capable, which will probably be more expensive than the ROK is. The workflow with it isn’t great and it needs significant pre heating. The whole thing is just a huge heat sink.
I’d grab a Flair Neo Flex or better yet a Flair Classic Solo way before I got a ROK again. You’ll get away without having an espresso capable grinder with these more easily, too, as they both have pressurized portafilters.
But the Robot trumps all of those by some margin.

It’s very easy in America to buy in a bottle, but as per my comment, my Zero water filter :) it’s basically a countertop reverse osmosis filter.
It takes my tap water of 150ish TDS to 0 TDS hence the brand name of ‘Zero’. The filters are more expensive than Brita et al but Zero actually works.
The guy who founded Decent posted on some forum the other day that he also uses a Zero and then adds his own recipe of minerals and stuff to it.
-
• #25274
Hmm no, I just picked mine up and gave it a good shake and it's not rattling about then. Maybe return for another if it's not too much hassle?
-
• #25275
Ah sorry I misread your original comment. You can't get distilled water anywhere here and if you do it's really expensive. Will look into the zero water filter. The Lotus drops look interesting too for making your own profiles
I'd go for the Rhinowares grinders instead.
I love Hario's stuff for the most part, but have always found their grinders to be pretty bad when it comes to reliability/strength. They tend to become pretty wobbly over time in my experience. Granted, I haven't used one in over 5 years, so they may have improved since.
