I’m converting a spare room into a ‘craft space’ for the MiL. I think it’s mainly sewing and such and herein lies the issue. The new carpet we’ve recently fitted is going to end up full of pins and needles. I know this because every time she gets her sewing machine out I find pins on the floor afterwards. Is there something I can put on, under near the sewing table to stop this happening? Magnetic cloth? Or something?

I always ask my LBS (same one actually, @exteroceptive) to fit BBs to new bikes as I like to get the threads chased and faced (BSA68mm or GTFO) and I don’t have the tools for it.
I know my LBS are happy doing this kind of work, but I will generally pick up a tube or something while I’m there - put a bit more cash behind the counter.

My OH might be going on a short trip to Africa. Any bright ideas for something related I could get them for Xmas?
Their Osprey backpack has gone awol, so I was wondering about that. But just not so pricey as we don't tend to spend a lot on each other's Xmas gifts.

You can get magnet-backed vinyl of the sort used for printing signs that are slapped onto the sides of vans. A printer who does this sort of stuff should be able to supply. I don't think that it will tolerate much abuse from castors or chair legs 'tho (if that is what she is sitting on). You might be better off going to Bisbell Magnets, getting a couple of decent sized neodymium magnets, attaching them to a stick and using them to do a 'sweep' of the floor when the sewing activities are over. Who knows what you might find.

Definitely echo this. I'm sure there must be ready made ones.
I have a work torch with a strong magnet, and I lost a tiny screw on the grass of my lawn. Sweeping the lawn retrieved it.

There's a whole company dedicated to making them

Save yourself the hassle, and take up the carpet, and put down the cheapest vinyl you can tolerate. It's the only way.

Urban legend in LA said that if you lost something somewhere, offer a meth addict money if they find it. They will find it.
Looking back, I can see how badly addiction sufferers are dehumanised in the States, probably everywhere tbh.

You probably want both, it's not easy to spot pins and needles on vinyl flooring, but the magnetic sweeper will pick them up more reliably from that than from carpet

I'd rather sweep the floor regularly than pay out almost 100 pounds for a magnetic rod to pick up dropped pins in a craft room. Also, I was giving some thought to the pattern of the vinyl flooring - I thought plain white would be better than a solid dark colour. Don't get any kind of speckle / marble effect.

It’s her room, her responsibility to keep it clean, no?

This is true, but The Dolly will be invading it at every opportunity and I’ll end up with a huge vets bill.

Thanks for the suggestions, I might get her this https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/cyclone-magnetic-swarf-collector/ to start with.

Had to replace plugs on some technics 1200s
Are 5a fuses appropriate for them? -
• #119797
I think you'd fine with 3a.
The power consumption is very low - something like 14W. -
• #119798
The British Standard for plugs, BS1363, has standardised on just two preferred fuse ratings, 3A and 13A. 3A is appropriate for a turntable. It's not likely to do any harm if you happen to have 5A fuses on hand.

Cheers both. 5a is what I have so I’ve popped those in (the plugs previously had 13a in). Will at some point swap for 3a. Or more likely will forget and never get round to it.

bit late - but maybe a hat/cap of some kind (depending on whether they’re going to the mountains of Morroco or the plains of Namibia..!)
Is there a way to ignore a user's posts but only in one particular thread?
