I think premise is the wrong word; weaponising it is more apt, as they’re justifying their action by using their historic record of Jewish people for being persecuted for thousand of years.

Yeah first para is not an unreasonable description. I think justified makes it sound cynical though - whereas the sense I get from Jewish friends is that it isn't cynical, they feel genuinely at threat - understandably so given the history.

Not that that excuses all the ways in which the Israeli state does unforgivable stuff, but I don't really feel I'm in much of a position to tell people whose families were killed a couple of generations ago just to get over it - and the issue is that the Oct 7 attacks just reinforce the fear that many Israelis feel they need to use force to protect themselves.

I’m not surprised, as the UN said, it didn’t happen in a vacuum, 75 years of brutal oppression resulting in this attack.

Israel have dropped the high explosive equivalent of two Hiroshima bombs on the Gaza strip since the commencement of hostilities. Apparently just short of half are considered to be 'dumb' munitions. All on a strip of land roughly analogous in size and population to the city of Chicago.

Which feels both massive in size, but also small when considering the population density.

Just seen IDF shot dead 3 hostages. Obviously a tragic mistake, but evidently they are firing at unarmed men of ‘fighting age’ in the wrong place at the wrong time. One wonders how many unarmed, innocent Palestinians were also “mis-identified as a threat"
