Can you not get Mercian to replace the bottom bracket shell?

Sure many frame builders out there can replace the BB.
Winston Vaz could do it for £150 if your in London.

Have you tried going to a shop to have them try to re-thread? I had a bike some time ago where I thought the threads were fucked as a bb installation went bad, lived with a threadless bb for a while that unscrewed a couple of time, got fed up took it to a shop they used a tap and said the threads were in perfect condition. They didn’t even charge for it, worth a try. Worst case scenario is they will charge a tenner maybe?
(Sorry if bb damage is different and my reply irrelevant) -

Definitely try to rethread it first, easy job and might be already the solution

amazing thanks - not wanting to spend the cash to be honest to get bb replaced (Mercian quoted £380)
REcutting sounds like a good option - anyone got a link for this in London.
For the meantime have purchased a FIRST Threadless as these were recommended and supposed to be 10xtimes better than YST

Winston can recut threads easily. As far as I know he is the best option for any kind of steel frame repairs in London.

Run taps through it if that doesn't work get some silver or brass blobbed into it and recut and if all lese fails, new shell.
You may wish to not bother with option 2, I've done it on a couple of frames but it's harder than I thought to get the threads clean enough to make a nice job of it and it's going to fuck the paint so maybe not worth it. It was a frame of mine and one for someone else that I've done, mine is still going strong and I've had no complaints re the other one so even a half arsed, messy job seems to be enough.

I’ve been using the First Components version for a few months now with no issues at all. I’m very impressed. Good quality bearing in standard size so should last forever.
I have my loved Merican frame (king of mercia 1990s barber pole) and after using a series of Threadless Bottom brackets are feeling a bit of cross roads with it. Love the bike but dont love worrying about the BB constantly - its my workhorse bike for getting about. Have been using YST threadless and they work fine - but not sure wether to try and get re cut or buy more expensive threadless (Like the FIRST components one -https://freshtripe.co.uk/first-threadless-bottom-bracket/)
anyone got any suggestions for someone good to recut - or think worth selling as might find a more loved home - really not sure what is best so would appreciate some advice
thanks
Joe
