  • Is it bad form to bring parts to an LBS and ask them to install them, or is it normal? It's a BB + chainset job beyond my skills / toolset but I can't afford high street RRP on the parts.

  • It’s not bad form as such if it’s just a BB and crankset. What is bad form is when you take a bike in for a service and you give them all the parts, as shops base their service price on selling parts too. Most shops will happily fit a BB and cranks for you.

  • We never had an issue, but let them know what you want to do. As they may be ordering in service parts for your bike and may also charge you slightly more. As has been said some of the profit from services are in the parts used.

  • I always ask my LBS (same one actually, @exteroceptive) to fit BBs to new bikes as I like to get the threads chased and faced (BSA68mm or GTFO) and I don’t have the tools for it.

I know my LBS are happy doing this kind of work, but I will generally pick up a tube or something while I’m there - put a bit more cash behind the counter.
