  • Exactly. Starmer is a lawyer he's all over the detail. I haven't seen a Tory in this administration yet that is on anything. Heaton- Harris this morning didn't know if the Rwandan's could send. asylum seekers to UK before the UK sent any to Rwanda

  • Which, let's face it, would be excellent trolling.

  • All this Rwanda stuff is raw meat for the terminally hard of thinking. A distraction from sinister stuff like investigating bank accounts for recipients of state benefits including pensions! We are definitely in Minority Report territory here. Truly, the tories are now an existential threat to democracy. We have to remove them and soon. The party has metastasised to become a monstrous fatberg in the sewer of late capitalism.

  • But come a general election

My guess is they do what worked before. A couple of months out: wish list of things that can never be achieved (40 new hospitals immigration centres), avoid scrutiny of debates by just not turning up, and say "can you really trust Labour?" as much as possible on the front pages. That might even win them another term.

  • How can anyone think that implementing this demented and massively expensive "solution" will deter any poor desparate souls from attempting to reach our shores?

No-one thinks it’ll actually work, it’s merely a bit of performative cruelty that red wall Tory MPs think might save their seats, even if they still lose the election.

  • why can't even the most eager of red meat recipients see that this scheme won't work...

They probably can. A quick skim of Guido Fawks comments shows most people thinking it's bollocks. Even the common sense advocates who want the navy to capture boats don't think it's workable.

  • (40 new hospitals immigration centres)

I believe, the term my MP is going with is "nightingale detention centres"

  • Just watched Sunaks Emergency Press Conference, it looked all so desperate.

All the journos, except GBN asked him questions about his leadership.

We all know this was really all about keeping him in his job, just desperate.

  • Is anything now not an Emergency at Tory Towers?

  • Totally. It's "Build the Wall" for local idiots.

  • Interesting that Sunak is threatening to take the whip off anybody who votes against the Rwanda plan which will go directly against there manifesto pledge of a commitment to Human rights and the international rules based system.

Even if it passes the commons the Lords will block it.

  • I read the opposite

But there was one crucial admission. Sunak said that the vote on the emergency legislation would not be treated as a confidence vote. This means that MPs can defy him without having the Conservative whip withdrawn.

  • On what planet does some cunt, being a cunt, and walking away from another bunch of cunts, being cunts, warrant an OMGEmergency!!!1!one?

We see you, you mousefaced twat.

  • Chris Bryant summed things up very well yesterday about Jenrick and the govt in general:

"has he resigned because he thinks this policy is crazy or because he doesn’t think it’s crazy enough?”

  • Just read a summary of Sunak’s press conference - fuck me, what a right wing thug

  • I'm So confused

I was hoping for a 3 line whip, all the crazies get kicked out and then a return to general Tory ambivilance until an election.

But then I also want a leadership challenge and that can't happen without the crazies.

  • From the press conference:

And spurious Human Rights claims – you’d better believe we’ve blocked those too … because we’re completely disapplying all the relevant sections of the Human Rights Act.

    Sounds great guys.

  • This morning's Today programme sems to have been Interesting

  • Post of the year, a fabulously apt final line, and a rare example of a mixed metaphor that absolutely works.

  • George Monbiot absolutely nailing the Rwanda scheme. Look at Mercer, he knows the gig is up

    https://vm.tiktok.com/ZGe8yxTvt/

  • Mercer was useless through out, properly pissy.

  • Monbiot was on fire last night, his take down of environmental policy policy was equally as good.

I used to live in Petersfield about 10 years ago, it was about the most sterotypical tory place going, I get the impression that might be changing.

  • The worst part was how condescending he was to George Monbiot when he said "I have no idea who you are"

Unfortunately for the veterans heartthrob Mercer, Monbiot flayed the Tories with his account of the what the Rwanda policy was really about.

  • Mercer really wasn’t happy about sadist being used with reference to the government, mentioned it a few times 😀

It was also brave of him to go all ‘glasshouses’ in accusing Labour of U turns too…
