Sounds like they try to have a lifestyle they can't afford.
A bit like the I bought a house far from work because cheaper and now I NEED a car.

How much does a 3 bed with outdoor space and excellent transport connections cost to rent or buy?

You're probably right.
But I still don't get how those travels are impossible without a car/why you would drive like that when you're dependent on car travel.
