Let other people bring weird and wonderful. Bring a solid simple whisky to let the other whiskies shine.
Think of arran 10 as the Kante/makele doing all the hard simple stuff.

agreed on the peated whiskies at tastings. it's the ardbeg 10 that i'm going to take but yes it's deffo one for later in the evening. we generally have a bit of a free pour afterwards and a few beers.
blair athol 12 is a good shout, don't think we've tried that one.
my other thoughts were the dalwhinnie 15 as i really liked the winters gold.
or maybe the black bottle 10 blended - really tasty for the price.i think we're already had the arran 10.
i'm guessing that one of the others will probably bring the lidl special if it's available.
i generally try to get something that's not supermarket shelf available (not from a snobbish standing, just not as likely to double up on bottles) -

there will be some weird ones for sure. some of the group like to get quite obscure.
ordered the blair athol 12 as i found it online for under £40 so that sealed the deal!

For something a bit different the Cotswolds stuff is really nice. As is Bimber if you can get your hands on some, but a bit more pricey and not available everywhere.

i've got a bottle of the cotswold signature, lovely stuff.
i don't think they sell an age statement whisky yet though? -

this is probably worth a look - who doesn't love a bit of cask strength?some good deals on this site.

Not that I’ve tried. Few different releases but the bog standard one which is prob about 3 years is very nice.

If you're really into Ardbeg, maybe give Ardbeg Uigeadail a go. It's very good.
-
• #4337
yes, tried it. loved it.
i think i've tried all of their standard expressions except the corryvreckan.all gets a bit spenny for me after that though unfortunately.

Yeah, t'is the way unfortunately.
If you've got a good whisky group though, you should mix up your tastings and pool money to buy some bottlings you'd otherwise never consider.

yes, something we've been meaning to do actually. might suggest it again on the night.
another thing is to start an infinity bottle. add a double from each bottle at the tasting and write it onto the label with a date added, then open it up when it's full and see what we come out with!
anyone ever done one?

Yeah, they can be fun, can also be a massive mess. Good thing to do as a group as it's a good way to track what you've drank together.

What's happened to Teacher's Whiskey?
All my local corner shops cant get it, Amazon doesn't stock it. -

While you may have a point, as an ex teacher who was regularly gifted an end of term bottle, and enjoyed Teacher's peaty superiority over bells, grouse, and other similar range mediocrity, it's disappeared from retail outlets online and off.
And not a peep about it going awol

If anyone can score me a bottle I'll pay above the rrp value & 18.99* instead of £15.99
*ex p&p. T&Cs apply

Oh man, I used to drink Teachers as a step above Sainsbury's own brand when I was feeling flush

Enjoying this atm, good change up from always defaulting to scotch.

Looks like it started disappearing a couple of years ago:

If you're taking the wee beastie don't take another peaty whisky. I'm not usually a fan of peaty whiskies at tastings, unless you're sticking to one distillery or you save one peaty whisky for the end. It's just makes tasting anthing else pointless afterwards imo.
As Chalfie says Arran 10 is always a good shout, anything from diago's flora and fauna range is a great way to discover some hidden gems without braking the bank. 10 years ago you could get the mortlach f&f for under 100 quid but the cat's out of the bag with mortlach so that one's the only one that's a crazy price.
The Dailuaine 16 or Blair Athol 12 are good options for this time of year, classic sherry cask bottlings, lots of Christmas cake vibes.
