  • Had a conversation with a retired engineer from SMEE, about the benefits of cone bearings on bicycles vs. ball bearings.

Has it been done? I presume not at scale because of the stark price differences. My Google-fu might be weak today but my searches come up with motorcycle chat, no bicicycles.

A few headsets, but I'm not aware of anything else. Shimano used cylindrical roller bearings in the BB7700 to take radial loads backed up with smaller than usual ball bearing for axial loads. In general, taper roller bearings don't suit the packaging requirements of bicycles, and offer negligible benefits under the load, speed and durability requirements of bicycle parts.
