Oh that's a good idea! How did you attach those rings to the rest of the ceiling? Mine are also chewed rather than cut, as you say, and quite an old crumbly material.
As we were only sorting the kitchen out to last until we renovated it I stuck them to the ceiling with crystal clear, a clear sticks like shit gun type gun. They were a real bastard to get back off a year later.
