Say that a steel something is made in Japan, Germany or Italy and people will pay silly prices. A 20cm polished tool steel rod with 2 Allen key heads protruding at 90deg from the shaft and a leather strip to hang if from? £25 please. But it’s desiiign … Sure, a pretty poor design for a bike tool at that.

I realise it doesn't mean it's good value or a good product, but they may not be making much money on that polished hex bar made in Japan to be honest, depending who made it and the size of the batches. Considering if somebody asked me to make 100 of those, I wouldn't really cover costs at £25 each - bearing in mind HMRC take 20% in VAT.

I turn metal recreationally, I’m not denying the capital expense in manufacturing them, but it’s easier to sell a less efficiently made, less functional, more stylised steel product for more than an objectively higher quality alternative if the product is Japanese, German or Italian.

Yes, definitely agree with your point.
We have to trade/market a bit on our UK-made status too. But, yes, agreeing with the point I think you are making - manufacturers shouldn't just trade on the 'made in XXXXX' with the higher costs that entails without bringing something else to the table - Like environmental and ethical assurances, living wage promises etc etc.

https://www.wiggle.com/p/prime-sr2d-disc-brake-front-hub-grey-12-x-100mm£59.98 for a set of star ratchet disc hubs. Came with end caps.
Only problem is going to be sourcing freehubs if Wiggle goes bust I guess

I got some of the £50 carbon rims a couple of weeks ago as well, that's gonna be a great wheelset for £160 + spokes
-
• #6413
That design is so similar to other star ratchet hubs I've serviced that there's half a chance that another star ratchet freehub like a DT Swiss one would work fine
-
• #6414
Yeah that's always an option, maybe with a bit of machining in the worst case, although the Wiggle Q&A pages do say that they're not compatible. Don't have any to hand to test it!

Any idea what the dimensions are? I managed to snag a 24h 85mm rim the other day. Sweet FA info about the hubs online though.

Managed to find this: https://primebikecomponents.com/pages/technical-support-documents
Specifically, for J bend:
I downloaded the exploded diagram and bearing replacement guide, etc. just in case they shut down the website

Oh that's weird, I could only see the exploded views!
Ok they've definitely changed that page ha. I messaged them earlier this morning.

Me too initially, not sure why! Just thought I would see if I could find anything on desktop and they showed up for some reason

Thanks. My wife is small so uses 650b wheels on all her bikes, these will be a nice upgrade.
They've only got lurid colours left now in size 'S/M' but there are other bargains to be had still!
