I did a similar thing buying a 26er Kona for my son when he outgrew his 20" wheeled SS. I then made the mistake of bodging a 1X Uberbike thing.

What's an uber bike?

Like everything anodized etc? Why a mistake?

The Kona Shred came with a dreadful fork which I switched out for a second hand air Reba. All good.
Then I added a rear derailleur extender from Uber and ditched the stock 2X and added a big rear cassette from Uber. Added a cheap narrow/wide chainring. This setup never worked properly due to the lack of a clutch in the rear derailleur. Cost buttons but was a complete timesuck.
Edit to add. The stock wheels on the Kona were heavy but bulletproof. I ran one over and expected the worst at the LBS. New spokes and a true and good to go!

Rode to the trails on Saturday, rode home again - 74km all in, first section here to show the tarmac/trail mix.
It's super flat and largely spinning along on tarmac - I got friction burns on the outside of my knees from my knee pads.
So! Advice on lightweight kneepads that will save me from skinning my knee if I go down, but are more optimised for pedalling than gnar?

I have never worn knee pads, or shin guards. A helmet, yes but never seen the need for extra protection.
-
• #27636
I've totally skinned both knees, it was extremely painful and had a big impact before the skin healed up - waking up stuck to the bedsheets was not great. I'm not going to not wear pads.
-
• #27637
Could take em off until you get to the trails?
-
• #27638
I could, but strapping them to the top tube or similar would offend my sense of aesthetics - I'd rather lose a little skin, which I admit is ridiculous.

• #27639
This seems to be a you problem, not a kit problem.
-
• #27640
Take them in a cheap string bag, leave string bag somewhere and use on the way back.
-
• #27641
Just push them down to you ankles on the roads and up bits ffs
-
• #27642
Ditto - pads around the ankles for the pedally flat/uphill bits.
-
• #27643
I've seen people do that but it's never really appealed, it just fills your pads with mud and grit surely?
-
• #27644
How fast are you pedalling uphill?!
-
• #27645
Each to their own but neither does skinned knees

one somehow survives childhood and adolescence and the rest without hardening the skin on knees, then the very things that protect your knees become their assailants. my suggestion would be to put a blob of sudocrem on each knee before a ride. it’s designed for exactly this purpose
-
• #27647
Ok, so - no pads are good for pedaling.
-
• #27649
Knee pads are the only thing I insist on wearing if doing any fally off likely riding, gloves and a helmet are optional depending on how fally off. I always fucking land on my knees and they're fucked now. Pull them down when not kneeded.
