  • Given the current reduced rrp this wasn't a massive bargain but it came with sub £150 of upgrades and my now sold Steamroller frameset paid the for most of it. Not a bad package as standard but this one has a Clarks hydro brakeset with Hope front rotor (pretty good setup!), Ritchey bars, carbon post, Nukeproof saddle and SKS guards. Big selling point is the steel fork for my front rack and obvious masses of tyre clearance. It weighs a ton and the setup above needs works but it's already a really enjoyable ride.

  • Got an email notification for a new post in this thread.

    I was not expecting that!

  • thsi is going way too quick for me, i am lost

  • Haha, yeah things are not going to plan atm. Rides are limited to a few mile radius of my house so a heavy bike with low gearing and big tyres is actually working quite well. Gonna fit the Rasket off my partners condor and some better cranks when i can find a puller otherwise i won't be doing much to this for now. Treating this as rehab bike only.

Shelf in my garage is currently where joy goes to die.

  • Stripped the Arkose and the CAAD in preparation for Arkose part deux. Frameset alone weighs at least 650g more then the CAAD10 and add to that the guards and heavy wheels (1kg heavier than my rim brake wheelset) i'll be lucky if this comes in under 10.5kg.

  • Small win, Arkose has external cable routing, might be practical but it looks shit. Clipping 2 gear cables onto the stock clips holding the rear brake line was going to look even worse however i found these nice low profile triple cable jobs off a Ragley that sit over the bosses and pull the cables right up against the frame.

    Yayyy...

  • i am lost

Easy, imagine an ape to man diagram then reverse it.

  • Trial single speed not a bad fit, gears coming soon.

  • Sun's out for once so it's time for an update.

The Arkose was rebuilt with the road groupset off my CAAD and whilst it was a comfy ride it was a bit sluggish with less than inspiring brakes. I hadn't planned on spending money on bikes atm but if it was going to be a viable replacement to the Cannondale it needed some work. Whilst looking into the (high) costs of switching to hydro's a single TRP HY/RD popped up on here cheap and it's made quite a difference to the overall braking. I can now scrub speed and modulate with the front with relatively little effort with the rear still needing a firm grab as and when i need it.

The wheels were dependable but a bit heavy. Considering how little i'm riding atm i couldn't justify a big spend on new wheels but i was running into headaches regarding the different standards and if the second hand stuff i was looking at could be made to work with good ol 100/135 qr's. Thankfully Black Friday stepped in and i picked up some half price Prime's that came complete with all the adapters and looked to be a solid buy. For £200 i didn't have high hopes but i gotta say i'm really impressed so far. A lot lighter than the previous wheelset and a couple mm wider these make a good budget road/groad wheelset IMO.

TLDR, lighter wheels and a better front brake have transformed my Arkose.

  • Looks better IRL but road setup at 9.1kg is surprisingly nimble/not shit looking

  • And big tyre speedster and/or winter road bike surprisingly successful. Makes me regret not grabbing Cake's bargain 2021 frameset but i didn't think i'd end up liking this that much.

  • Arkose is the perfect all rounder tbf..

    Paint actually looks pretty smart!

  • Rehab bike has also had some TLC. Plan was to keep this for recovery rides/local trips only so hadn't expected to use anything other than what i had in the parts bin. I certainly wasn't going to fit tan walls on this... TBH i would much prefer the new tyres in all black but these GKs came up at a really good price and have transformed the ride. So much so that this may be heading into commuter bike territory. I've even started to get on (or really rather dig) my cheap plastic flat pedals, there's a lot of joy to be found in riding a slow heavy bike in boots, jeans and a casual winter jacket (Shit Radavist Riders Say). Front guard still needs sorting and some adjustment to the Rasket otherwise this is done until i can figure out if i want gears on it or not.

  • And finally there's a new plan to get this back on the road in the new on trend middle aged fixed gear guise.

  • Just when I forget about that Vitus you post a better version of it. I don’t need one, but I still want one. Maybe it’s the GT Performer style down tube. Yours looks good.

  • Commuter mode engaged.
