Sounds like a good idea but not sure how it would work with toddler who likes to play with them (although I guess she hasn't smashed any plates yet).

You can buy sheets of self-adhesive felt pads that you can stick on the underside - Stops them scratching up tables, and when
youyour toddler drops them, they crack but don't smash. -
The concept has survived two toddlers in our house.
You just have to make sure they don't bang the sharp corners on your wooden dining table.

If you're not fussed about your coasters matching, go to your local tops tiles and look for a cheap box of square tiles, then put sticky felt pads on the back.
