Any of you actually been in a prison?
I’ve visited about 10 jails and prisons in the US, LATAM, and UK. In equivalent security settings, UK facilities are usually better, but there are some outliers.

Went to a drinks reception for the opening of a new wing at Feltham YOI before the regulars moved in. I was a Y at the time so does that count?
I have a little involvement with https://www.prisonersabroad.org.uk/

Not sure what that has to do with my point.
Prison should be the absolute last resort.
Many prisoners have mental health issues, trauma, low level education etc. and I think it's overused in the UK.
Some people have committed violent crimes that victims want ti be punished severely, some people are a danger to society and rehabilitation failed, but as a whole prison is expensive and often makes outcomes worse.
Been in prison? Now you can't get a job in many places....and so on.

No worries thanks for clarifying.
It must be tough atm?
From what I read the UK justice system is very underfunded and cases take ages to be heard.

Some people are now being given trial dates in 2026.

I don’t practice in the UK but I do live here and have friends who are UK barristers and solicitors. They agree that the system is underfunded and people are overstretched at every level.

One of the few good things the Tories have done is to reform the criminal records rehabilitation periods.
I am a big advocate of giving people another chance and hopefully the new legislation will help some people to move on from their past.

I know someone who was arrested 18 months ago (will be a crown court case) and he still hasn't had a court date.

tommy yaxley robinson lennon arrested for protesting against anti semitism, compares the march to the battle of cable street which it also says was a march against anti semitism ? i thought the tommy yaxley robinson lennon and his far right would be pro antisemitism and the battle of cable street was protest against against the far right and mosely ? i'm very confusedis the journalist incorrect ? tommy robinson also claims to be a journalist

Wasn't suppose to be a direct reply to, just a general chatting reply.
Was trying to discuss how expensive it is to keep people locked up? That money IMO might be better spent on smaller class sizes ;) also been told that lots of prisoners suffer from undiagnosed ADHD (the impulse control)Also look how badly the private prisons have been run and all they are there is to make profit for someone.
As for being in prison, I wondered many people had either seen inside a prison, or experienced time in prison over police cells.
If you think prison is bad, try a mental health ward.

Our experiences colour our prejudices - makes perfect sense to feel more connection to teenagers who died doing what we all did as teenagers.

It always seemed batshit crazy, bordering on psychopathic, that companies and their directors are legally compelled to maximise their profits, without regard to any other factors. This sounds like a very positive change that needs to happen:
"adding a duty for directors to consider the social, economic and environmental impact of their business alongside profitability and returns for shareholders"
-

companies and their directors are legally compelled to maximise their profits, without regard to any other factors.
This isn't accurate though - the Companies Act 2006, for a start, has a lot more in it that just maximisation of profit.
172Duty to promote the success of the company
(1)A director of a company must act in the way he considers, in good faith, would be most likely to promote the success of the company for the benefit of its members as a whole, and in doing so have regard (amongst other matters) to—
(a)the likely consequences of any decision in the long term,
(b)the interests of the company's employees,
(c)the need to foster the company's business relationships with suppliers, customers and others,
(d)the impact of the company's operations on the community and the environment,
(e)the desirability of the company maintaining a reputation for high standards of business conduct, and
(f)the need to act fairly as between members of the company.Don't (c) and (d) already cover what is suggested in the article?

That's interesting. I always heard the "maximise profit or be sacked" thing.

That is certainly what happened to our CEO
Do you know how much prisons in the UK cost.
Any of you actually been in a prison?
