  • Some of these replies belong on Weight Weenies, ffs if the thread annoys you go away. My point was nothing to do with braking performance. It was looking at a way of getting higher end groups in the future for people with expensive rim brake bikes. A little niche product that would allow hydro group on rim bike. The rims will be available for ever, just like tubs still are.

Can the performance of a clean and nicely set-up dura-ace 9100 caliper on an alloy rim be bettered ?

    Yes, with MT200's

  • What? Nobody has said 'breaks' yet?
Me, I'm happy to admit to going with form over function. I rarely use the coward levers anyway.

  • my break pet peeve is 'Dirty Harry', when it even says Dirt Harry on the lever.

  • Yes they are obviously Dirt Harry breaks.

  • It's not gonna happen. Did anyone ever use THE SRAM hydro rim calipers? You can still get the newest stuff in cable rim version anyways

Road brakes have been good enough since Shimano 7400 in 1984.

  • I think the window of being able to buy new, higher end stuff for rim brakes is narrowing.

I can't see the next gen of Di2 stuff offering a rim lever, and honestly I'd be surprised if whatever Campag offers next in the Record-ish type of space has a rim brake option. Obvs, there will be spares around for a fair bit longer, I think the lower tier stuff probably has a while left, and it wouldn't surprise me if a small industry grew up from guys making backwards compatible spares, but if if I had a beloved rim brake frame that I wanted to keep running in perpetuity with high quality kit, I'd stock up on a few spare bits and pieces over the next year.

I know there are a few guys on a US forum who've got several full spare DA or Record gruppos sitting around for precisely this purpose.

Ditto wheels as well, if you want carbon. And anything mechanical at above 105 level.

Slightly OT, but I was hoping to find 12sp Chorus heavily discounted in the Black Friday sales, and would have picked up a rim brake groupset if there had been.

  • I accidentally discovered roller cam brakes when I bought my stupid 80s 26er tandem, and I love them. Amazing modulation and stopping power, there’s no dragbrake on that bike and have done loaded tour with another grownup on it… felt fine. Granted, not somewhere hilly mind.

  • I am using a 80 year old sturmey archer 3 speed with drum brake and it works better than any rim brake I've used.

imo rim brakes always lacked in power

  • New thoughts for old news? Hydro rim brakes have been done... I had some magura rt6 that were pretty good.
