Out of pure curiosity, what should be the size of the forks?

Most Cannondale (or other) 1 1/4" tapered forks. You can find them pretty cheap these days, i have run both CAAD10 and CAAD12 forks on mine. 12's will give you loads more tyre clearance on the front but the back is more limiting.
