Does anyone have any recommendations for whole house water filters?
There are models you can from Amazon that are self-fit. Same technology as the big brands. Cheaper - just get a plumber to fit it for you if you can't do it (it's not trivial...). They'll do just as shit a job as the plumbers who fit the big brands!
The actual machines should cost about £10 but they don't. It's a bit of a racket really.

We use a Kinetico, but also considered Ecowater.
Couldn't recommend it enough.
None of them are particularly complex to plumb in: your water intake goes through it and out the other side. Machine has an overflow which goes into the drain. The intake is also t-d off so that you can bypass the machine should you want need via stopcocks, then a separate hard water feed for drinking water/plants.
