Dis gawn be good.
Never seen a Marin with this kind of paint job!

Sounds like a cool project! I got an eldridge grade from the same era. It‘s odd that yours doesn‘t have the marin afterburner-style dropouts.

@Rodolfo Oh no, hope you are doing alright! Recovery bikes are great projects though.
@ectoplasmosis yeah, me neither but I was quite happy about it in the end. Proper 90s mtb paintjob!
@Sig_Arlecchino yes, I only knew the ones I attached below. Your Eldridge Grade looks very much like mine though.

Those dropouts are one of the nicest dropouts to ever exist.

Yap, the rest of the details is pretty much identical: cable stops, seatpost binder cluster, paintjob. Maybe some temporary supply chain issues with the dropouts, who knows. Anyway, looking forward to see this progress.

You are too kind @Maj <3
Alright, let's not unnecessarily drag this out.
Something I wanted to utilise was the Shimano Deore 1x10 groupset I had left over from when I upgraded the inbred to 12speed.
Turned out it was quite tricky to find a used, decently priced rim brake qr 26" wheelset that would take wide tyres and a 10speed cassette. The more I thought about it the more I also loved the idea of a hub dynamo.
This thing is supposed to be practical right?
Needs a hub dynamo!
I was already looking for decently priced bits to get wheels made when I went on a ride with a friend to explore brutalist churches and check his new Black Mountain Cycles Monstercross. He told me about this German online shop specialising in hub dynamo wheels.
That and the fact that the BM IQ-XS was on sale at bike-components and I still had a voucher with them sealed the deal and I ended up buying a new wheelset

Besides a headset, the main missing component to make this into a rideable bike was a crankset. Everything else I had as spare part or could've borrowed from the Raleigh R.I.P. (currently resting in pieces).
I am usually very much a silver finishing kit guy but somehow it was clear to me early on that this bike would embrace black and let the frame be the centrepiece.
Scouting for cranks I felt like there was exactly one right choice.
Square taper, black, sleek, simple and affordable. Period correct? As if I cared but yes, I believe.
That's Shimano Deore LX cranks and I knew just the right guy who might have some.
Mirkinger is a local bike guy and he helped me out with replacing some old Deore cranks before. He invited me to go through his stash of stuff and next to the cranks I was looking for I also scored a set of Deore XT BR M739 v-brakes (if you know you know).
But the real treasure I uncovered was this set of purple cantis and matching NOS QR releases.
If you follow this thread you know I can hardly say no to some anodised aluminium. I was able to vividly see those brakes on my bike and at that point, I knew I wouldn't be able to get around a handful of purple accents to round things off.

If only there some nice bidons that would match those decals...
Great stuff - thanks for going bankrupt to entertain us

This thread is alive again! I am going to grab popcorns, this is entertaining as always

Haha creepy, I just browsed your shop like 10 minutes ago.
Speaking of bidons and going bankrupt. If you live in Vienna then you need Keego bottles. They are all the rage atm. Plastic bottles with a thin titanium layer inside. No plastic taste and apparently less likely to get moldy. They are also $$$. I got one recently to see what the hype is all about. I usually run it in tandem with my big Nalgene. So no bidon budget atm but I keep going over my bikes in my head to see which bike could use some new bottle cages.

They look a bit naughty.
I am working on a wide cage for nalgenes etc anf steel bottle friendly cages as well

Alright, where were we?
Ah yes, purple brakes! I was super stoked about bringing them home and only later realised that quite a few parts were missing. I have been trying for ages to figure out what exact model these brakes are and if I can still get spare parts and mainly figuring out what straddle wire I need for best performance. Apparently setting up canti brakes perfectly is some sort of black magic and I've only ever done it once or twice before.
It was more of a coincidence that I realised that these brakes are almost Identical to Shimano BR-CT91 brakes. And a new full set including all missing wires and screws was available for next to nothing. So when the brakes arrived I did some part swapping and it turned out everything was a perfect match and cheaper than buying spares on their own.
With some borrowed bits from the Raleigh and some cheap Schwalbe tyres, I was finally able to quickly stick together a first version of the bike.

In the meantime, the dynamo light and brake pads arrived. The bike was ready for a first spin, picking up a big bottle cage for my Nalgene and taking some pictures in the evening sun.

Very cool! What's the tyre size?
-
• #447
excellent bike
-
• #448
Thank you! These are 2.15" but I already replaced them. I realised that I don't like the tyres very much. They are kinda wobbly and too narrow. I got them cheap with the wheelset.
Since this is mostly going to be a city / #coffeeoutside / picnic rig I replaced them with some MAXXIS DTH 2.3" slicks.

This is tremendous. Not a bad line on it.
Ha!
Am doing a similar thing now with a cadex frame under the guise of needing to have a biek that I can use sitting more upright due to a recent arm injury.
Looking FWD to the result!
