  • Mexican stuff is good these days and I like the look of the new Vintera II stuff a lot more than the previous Vintera line (the ocean turquoise 50s Strat… nice). Mexican Fenders approaching a grand always feels painful but that's just the cost of everything right now, isn't it. A few years ago Andertons & co were discounting the American Original 70s Tele Custom (the one with the CuNiFe neck humbucker) to about £1300. Now the equivalent ones (American Vintage II) are £1800-£2000. Really wish I'd gone for that guitar at the time.

  • Cheers all, giving that blonde nocaster some serious thought!

  • @EB classic vibe Tele for £260 👍

  • Oooh! Thanks!

  • The only downside for me is that thick gloss lacquer on the neck and fretboard. Easy enough to remove?

Sprung for the cheapest Tele on that page the aged white blonde. I figure for the money I can do some fettling and upgrades if needed.

  • I've nearly got a little practice rig together based around an orange terror stamp and a fender superchamp 1x12 cab- ready in waiting for the forum fabricated design we're working on . In the mean time i'm obsessing over p90 single pickup options - mostly because I don't love playing my epi 335dot (c.2000) - despite how pretty I find it. There's a nice noventa tele on ebay for 470 but this godin is really speaking to me and seems a crazy good deal. I'd still have to sell the 335 tho ... https://www.rimmersmusic.co.uk/used-godin-summit-classic-sg-electric-guitar-vintage-burst-bolton-store-p53835

  • This popped up on marketplace - ‘guitar amp’, it’s pretty cute I couldn’t not buy if for the price, which is pretty stupid as I’m meant to be getting rid of stuff. At least it’s small enough to be hidden. I’ll try to get my act together and list a few guitars/amps and pop them up at forum rates here first…

  • That looks fun.

  • Man, I find it hard to find the time to read and respond to threads at a rate that feels remotely like social interaction these days. It’s more like sending and receiving letters in bottles between dozens of people over months. ANYWAY, sorry if I’ve missed some six stringed fun. Here are this week’s guitar related highlights.

    1. Saw Dinosaur Jr at The Garage. It was amazing. J played THREE cranked Marshall full stacks (although one was actually a Hiwatt head) and Lou Barlow (total dude and MVP) played an SVT and Marshall full stack too. Kevin Shields and Bernard Butler guested. My ears are still ringing. It was awesome.
    2. Erm.

  • Oh yeah that Jag and Laney amp that I’m setting up for my mate’s lad:

The drive channel on the Laney LC30 is surprisingly good!

  • That Jag 😍

  • I love Laney amps, the Grosvenor had them in their backline and I really looked forward to using them. Like a really good JCM800.

  • Ugh my first real amp was a laney lc 15r - disappeared in the haze of late noughties mid week gig circuit - it was silver and absolutely cooked

  • Haha! Your tone was blistering! Fuck, that was a fun night.

  • Heh! Our guitarist in the Tackies had an LC15 too till we got given some “nice” stuff by the label. It worked great for what we did.

  • I was there too, what a gig! Stuart Braithwaite too.

  • fFs being plagued by the double-post gremlins today.

  • Oh yeah! Fuck that must have been LOUD.

  • I was cowering by the sound desk.

  • Dumb question but the Laney has a two button foot switch for channel and reverb, but only the channel function works. It’s connected by a 1/4 inch cable… would it be because he needs a stereo type 1/4 jack to get both buttons to work?

  • I DJ'd at the first London Asheton, Asheton, Mascis, Watt gig at the Astoria. The only time you could hear Ron and his brother was during the break in TV Eye. He was so fucking loud, it was absolutely ridiculous. Spoilt the whole night for everyone there to see Ron and Scott.

  • Yeah that sounds annoying. He is a weird dude.

I’m not really a fan of extreme volume for volume’s sake - I’ve been so some gigs where the sheer dB level through the FoH has exceeded my ear’s threshold to process it and all I could perceive was pain and an overwhelming whooshing sound. Pointless.

This was a really satisfyingly visceral sort of loud that worked brilliantly in the space. Something really exciting about hearing full stacks being cranked in a space like that. Wasn’t harsh or painful at all. Well, not from the back of the room anyway.

  • If anyone is interested in an unusual Gibson Les Paul I’m going to sell this Smartwood. Lots on the net about them (and a few on eBay for silly money). No binding/inlays, lovely wood, made in USA, limited edition, thin body with belly cut, gold hardware, this one has a roller bridge added, bit of fret wear otherwise very good and I will include a Levy’s gig bag - sold. I’ll also be selling the fender clone (Chinese) details to follow.

  • I have some fancy earplugs, no way that would have been survivable otherwise ; - )
