Peak spurs today.

2nd October 1976, Hereford United v Wolves in the old Second Division, sponsored by Hoover (“it bears as if sweeps as it cleans” met with “how’s you suction, love?”), the away fans chucking wooden beer crates on the pitch, an excited boy on the touch line (me) agog with the exploits of Willie Carr and Kenny Hibbett (it finished 1-6 and at the end of the season Wolves were champions and Hereford relegated from their single season in the second tier). My mum is in the left.
Halcyon days.

Great to see the Toon are at the ‘confronting players’ stage already.

7th in the league, Champions League football, and they're still not happy.
I guess they assumed the blood money would turn them into City instantly.

They’re dickheads, this faction of Newcastle supporters. Have been particularly since Kevin Keegan had them believing that aiming to win every match 5-4 (because it’s exciting and what the good people of Newcastle deserve) is how a football club wins a league. They were probably the same before that time, but I’m only an 80(s) child so couldn’t say for certain.
As an aside, I also liked the BBC saying that Wolves shocked Spurs with those two late goals… goals which anyone could have predicted since around 54mins!

I'm not sure, I had 5 Live on in the car and they said it looked like Wolves could play for another 90 minutes and still not score. Then the next report was Sarabia's goal.
What a goal as well.

Oh it was looking like one of those matches for Wolves, but not for lack of chances… one was going to go in. Or two.

Maybe VAR isn't so bad.

man citeh announce record profits, but don't specify where the money comes from and chelsea are under investigation for dodgy payments from abramovich
so the two most successful clubs of the last 20 years are both under investigation for dodgy dealings. kind of sums up the premier league
shameful

I'd be happy to have no VAR and those kind of decisions occasionally.
I'm very much missing a goal being a goal as soon as it is scored this season (admittedly I'm also missing us scoring goals).

Ditto (although that decision was almost impossbly bad). You can accept a simple bit of human error in real time by an official but not the same human error when a team of refs are presented with every angle at any speed you could wish for.
VAR's lowered the general standard of refereeing and you never know when you can celebrate. I don't really get to games any more but they've totally ruined the matchgoing fan's enjoyment.

Niamh Charles looks like an absolute baller, though.

I was at Bournemouth the other week. Spent something like 6 minutes waiting for a goal that was clearly offside to be called offside. No-one in the ground knew what we were waiting for, it was shit.
When I was at Arsenal last weekend the celebration for their goal first was really muted, I'm assuming everyone just thought it was going to be disallowed.

This is great. As always. Ian Wright.

Meanwhile in the Championship, we've had a few blatant penalties not given that VAR might have sorted.

Hell in a handcart. I'm glad I was a football-obsessed teenager when I was.

They've had a good enough start to the season and this will push them on I think. I think 30 points could be enough to stay up this season so I think they'll stay up.
-
• #166872
That's going to liven things up.
-
• #166873
Ouch.
Still only second from bottom though. Tbh they seem to be coming together under Dyche, I expect they’ll probably stay up anyway.
Those lawsuits from the other clubs might hurt if they land successfully tho.

Is there precedent being set here re City's many outstanding breach cases?
-
• #166875
Agreed, Keane and Wright are brilliant together.
Spurs lol.
