A wide, straight, open road with good visibility, in the middle of the day. How...?

In the absence of further reporting, it's obviously impossible to say what happened. As always, there are a couple of possibilities, but in the current news media climate it's not very likely that there will be a follow-up article.
There will be an inquest, at which all known facts will be revealed, and journalists or campaigners sometimes go to these. Inquests often take place long after a crash, and if you're not an interested party, you have to monitor the relevant coroner's office's web-site (and know the victim's name).

RIP. I rarely cycle out this way but believe it’s quite a popular route towards some nice lanes in and around Otford. Is it unusual that the article specifically mentions Audi rather than just a car?

i find this quite frustrating - i've been trying to find out if any further action has been taken in a cyclist fatality case in July close to where i live, but haven't been able to find any information other than the initial press coverage.
has anyone had any luck contacting the police directly to see what the status of an investigation is? or would they not give out that kind of info to a member of the public?

No, the police often mention makes or colours of cars when appealing for witnesses. Someone may have seen something even minutes before such a crash that can be helpful, e.g. a car being driven erratically. Describing the car can obviously jog people's memory.

They wouldn't, except to people involved with the case, e.g. lawyers, especially if there's a court case, which is obviously sensitive in respect of how much information is reported in public.
Also bear in mind that some families/friends want to be left to grieve in peace for a relative or friend, while others want to grieve in public (and others are in between those extremes). If you're unconnected to the case, your best chance is to pay attention to the inquest listings at your local coroner's court and go to the inquest when it happens.

RIP Rider.

Sad to announce that the rider in question was Richard Birtwhistle, of Sydenham Wheelers. Richard was a keen time trialist, and even knocked out a short 58 for a 25 mile TT in September of this year despite being in his late 60s.
The organ donation team were able to find two people to take his liver and kidneys and his heart has gone to research. They were amazed at the condition of his organs, then again his fitness and racing was witness to his lifestyle.
RIP Richard.

Very sorry to hear about Richard, Sam. I thought it might have been a roadie. I think his surname may be spelled 'Birtwistle'?
I can't find any further reporting on the crash yet.
Thoughts with all who loved him.

A rider has died after being hit in Bromley on Saturday. The article doesn't say when he died.

The police say it happened close to Hewitts Farm, which is about here:

As is usual these days, other news sites have very similar articles, all write-ups of the police press release:
