Every time I look at this thread, its title reminds me of Geoffrey Wheatcroft's book "The strange death of Tory England" (which I assumed from the start @skydancer had read), published back in 2005. Both titles always make me think "It's taking a fuck of a long time."
It's still valid as an analysis of the Tory party's problems, but he didn't foresee their coping mechanisms and the English public's susceptibility to those.
