I used to vaguely know Gareth Thomas (currently Shadow Minister for Trade), he won Harrow West in 1997 which was a huge surprise as it had been Tory ever since it was created post-war, and he overturned an 18k majority. He had no expectation of winning and had to hurriedly resign his job. Kudos to him for retaining it since then, although shows you how the political landscape has changed I suppose.
I remain convinced that Tory HQ put no more thought into selecting red wall candidates than they did choosing a Pret sandwich for lunch and were fucking horrified when they actually won.
Genuinely amazed everytime I sees the names of the constituencies they represent and half the time I think "that's not a real place, that's made up". I'm clearly a metropolitan elite.
