  • Latest YouGov had Lab at 47% and 2% between Lib Dems and Reform, but the other way round, so maybe. I didn't know Reform had got that big already tbh :/

  • Splitting the Tory vote đź‘Ť

  • The far right headbangers think Sunak hasn’t gone far enough, so will vote for Reform instead of the Tories. Meanwhile the Tories are getting squeezed by the LibDems in the centre, dragging their poll ratings down.

Hopefully Reform won’t shit the bed at the next GE and stand down all their candidates (an analysis of how much this aided the Tories in winning their majority is long overdue).

  • The reform polling isn't being bared out in any of the byelections its more like 3%

  • Lee isn't taking it well

  • What a total cunt that guy is. Like the pub bore on steroids

  • What would happen if I "ignore the laws" and punch him in his pink and flabby face, please?

Edit: I should add I don't advocate violence against MPs for the reasons that have been listed many times, however much it may be deserved in 30p Lee's case...

  • You've been very patient in not punching him in the face before. I'm now demanding action.

Punch him in the face please.

It's the will of the people.

  • I remain convinced that Tory HQ put no more thought into selecting red wall candidates than they did choosing a Pret sandwich for lunch and were fucking horrified when they actually won.
Genuinely amazed everytime I sees the names of the constituencies they represent and half the time I think "that's not a real place, that's made up". I'm clearly a metropolitan elite.

  • I think it’s clear they spent far more thought on Pret lunches. Anderson, Gullis, Clarke-Smith, that dodgy twat in Blackpool…

  • Not forgetting the Member for Penistone*

    *definitely made up

  • Shapps.

  • Every time I look at this thread, its title reminds me of Geoffrey Wheatcroft's book "The strange death of Tory England" (which I assumed from the start @skydancer had read), published back in 2005. Both titles always make me think "It's taking a fuck of a long time."

  • She was on Channel 4 news railing against “the elites”. She’s Cambridge educated ffs, which basically gives you lifetime membership of the elite.

  • I remain convinced that Tory HQ put no more thought into selecting red wall candidates than they did choosing a Pret sandwich for lunch and were fucking horrified when they actually won.

Didn't Blair / Mandelson have similar with their 1997 intake - they didn't know who half of them were.

  • Wheatcroft's was totally off the mark. As proved previously and subsequently to his writting it.

  • I used to vaguely know Gareth Thomas (currently Shadow Minister for Trade), he won Harrow West in 1997 which was a huge surprise as it had been Tory ever since it was created post-war, and he overturned an 18k majority. He had no expectation of winning and had to hurriedly resign his job. Kudos to him for retaining it since then, although shows you how the political landscape has changed I suppose.

  • Wheatcroft's was totally off the mark.

It's still valid as an analysis of the Tory party's problems, but he didn't foresee their coping mechanisms and the English public's susceptibility to those.

  • The original thread title was 'the fall of Liz Truss' a short story that was concluded on page 40.

  • The original thread title was 'the fall of Liz Truss'

I was probably changing an inner tube and missed it.

  • The original thread title was 'the fall of Liz Truss'

    a simpler time

  • That title was inspired by lettuce and should have read 'Decay of Liz Truss / Tory Party'

  • He didn't waste any time:

  • Long interview with Dominic Cummings about why current government is a mess. Says that Sunak is going down the same path as previous PMs, by fire-fighting the latest issue of the day rather than trying to get anything meaningful done.

  • from that angle he looks a bit like Blair
